How to turn expertise into a digital product

The useful product is rarely “everything you know.” It is the smallest coherent body of knowledge that helps a specific person move from a current state to a desired result.

1. Start with a transformation, not a content library

Courses and guides often become bloated because the creator starts by listing topics. Start instead with the before-and-after state. What should become easier, clearer, faster, safer, or more achievable for the buyer?

2. Choose one market slice

Expertise may help many kinds of people, but the first product becomes easier to design when the buyer is specific. A narrower market sharpens examples, objections, language, scope, and acquisition.

3. Build the path before the lessons

Map the few major steps that create the result. Only then decide which lessons, templates, examples, exercises, or tools are necessary to move through each step.

4. Remove knowledge that does not change action

Interesting information is not automatically product value. If a section does not help the buyer decide, do, diagnose, practice, or complete something relevant to the outcome, challenge whether it belongs in version one.

5. Validate before polishing

Test the product direction and promise while changes are still cheap. A smaller validated product is usually a better starting point than a polished large product built on untested assumptions.

Apply this inside a product project.

Use the Product Engine to carry the decisions from Market through Launch.
